A Mistake

"An error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it."
- Anonymous

According to the myths, Hercules killed Hippolyta by mistake. However, we can see that the Amazons were also destroyed, with its people, when the Europeans arrived to America. Many people have stated that they did not know how bad what they were doing was. Nevertheless, I believe that you must accept the consequences of your actions, even though you didn’t know that what you are doing is wrong. I can relate this to the modern world, crimes and the law. Today sating to a judge that you did not know that what you were doing was wrong, or that you were not aware of the law and the consequences, is not a valid argument. To conclude, I believe that both Hercules and the Europeans are responsible for the Hippolyta and the Amazons, and none of them have an excuse for it.

Revenge’s Perfume

Fragrances are designed in such a way, that the person wearing it won’t smell it, but others will and their senses will be are altered by the scent. The worst part is that all of this will happen incontinently.

For Hallgerd started to kill one of Bergothas men. I don’t think she even thought the effects that this death could produce her. First of all she didn’t think that she might damage her husbands relationship with Njal. Also, she was inane enough to think that Bergthora wouldn’t strike back, and so on, and in the end both of them would loose everything. So yes, Hallgerd made a mistake and in normal cases she would have a second chance and apologize, but she had the misfortune that Bergthora and herself had smelled revenge’s perfume.

As I predicted, Bergthora found it totally fair to kill one of Halberd’s men, and so on. These two women didn’t seem to realize the damage that they caused, and how they were ruining their husbands relationship. Also, they started to loose control of the situation, and nobody stopped them and just ignored the importance of it. “Gunnar said he did not want to argue with her and walked away. He found Kolskegg and said to him, “Go to Njal and tell him that Thord should bed on his guard, in spite of our settlement, for I don’t think it will last.” (Njal’s Saga. Pg. 69)

These women fell in the trap. They had good hearts, but they just needed a little bit of impulse to make them fall over the cliff. The mistake that they made had no way back, and their hearts were turned into stones in a matter of seconds.

I’m an addictive feeling. You start fowling with me, and you will hurt yourself, and remember I have no way back and the snowball effect is my right hand. What am I? Revenge.

Battle Betweenn Two Goods

I have always been told that everything had a reason, and its true. The actions of every person are a demonstration of what they have inside, and we all take a path for a cause, and most of the times we believe that the path we took is the right one. This is why I don’t believe in most of the wars, or in the hatred between enemies.

Have you ever thought that the person you are fighting with has a specific reason, and he/she believes that they are making the right decision? Have you ever thought that stealing is a thief’s right decision, so they can get out of another problem? I believe that when you truly understand you opponent, you will probably change your mind about fighting them. However, until you don’t walk a mile in their shoes, you have no right to judge them, and therefore, to fight them.

In Njal’s Saga, when Gunnar and Kolskegg fought the brothers Vandil and Kolskegg, they didn’t understand well what the brothers wanted. I believe that Vandil and Kolskegg were only protecting the treasure that belonged to them, and they had the right to have it and fight for it. In the other hand, Gunnar and Kolskegg also wanted the treasure, and needed it in order to keep on with their lives and pay off to others. In conclusion, I don’t think that Gunnar and Kolskegg had the right to murder the brothers for a treasure, because you cant expect them to just give up something that belonged to them, and yet Gunnar and Kolskegg had the need for the treasure.

War is pointless, because both sides have their valid ideals. But the problem is that we forget to see through the other persons eyes, and we think we can judge them for everything they do. However, we are nobody to judge others, or to kill them for something the stand for.

Some Change Won’t Hurt

How will men feel if women ruled the world? How would the world react if one of the greatest leaders turned out to be a woman? Honestly, I think that men would say that they would react as if it was a man, but I think that deep down they would be angry and they wouldn’t recognize her. That is why, I admire women that strand up, and remember men that they are not the priority in the world. One of the women is Unn, one of the strong women in Njal’s Saga, and she was the only one in her family that stood up for what they needed and believed.

When something is stolen from you and your family, there is nothing that can stop a courageous person, from getting it back. Unn is not the exception, and when she lost everything, she seeked Njal. “I don’t want to waste your property,” she said. “Then what do you want?” he said. “I want to reclaim my property from Hrut,” she said. (Njal’s Saga. 21. Pg. 35). Also, this woman didn’t let herself seduce by other propositions that gave her a lot of profit, because she knew what she wanted, and knew that the only thing that will make her satisfied was her land.

I believe that if men were to do this, long time ago they would take the profit, since usually their ambition makes them forget what they truly want and need. For example, the ex-president of the United States, George W. Bush, used the countries money for a war in Iraq, instead of taking good care of his own country and using the money to feed the poor.

Unn is a demonstration to the world the power of women, and she makes the public remember that during history there have been great women that have made great changes, and yet received little or no recognizition. Unn not only gave honor to her own name, but to the women in general, and remembered the world that we are capable of change.

The Power of Advice

I love to give my friend advice, and yet I know I’m nobody to do so. I mean how can you give advice, if you haven’t understood yourself entirely. That is why I believe that someone that can give advice is someone to look up to, because not only they can understand themselves and others enough, but they can help them in tangled knots.

A counselor for instance, has to study and understand the human nature and feelings a lot, so they can help them take paths, that might not seem the best, but in the end they are the right ones. Also, they have to have a lot of strength and security about themselves, so they pain that their patients have won’t affect them, and they have to be able to help themselves so they can help others.

Njal is counselor. People look at him as a fountain of advice and help. “She answered, “Go to Njal at Berthorshvol- he’ll be able to come up with a plan, and besides, he’s a great friend of yours.” (Njal’s Saga pg. 36) He first must understand want they want, and what they want to hear. From that he must search for paths they can follow, and will reach the original goal.

Those who have cleaned themselves, and are willing to clean others can, only use the power of advice. They should be looked forward, and they are the only ones that truly deserve this power, for the can use it well.

Chameleon

We always categorize people. Sometimes we get someone and classify him or her as an authority, but there are others you see them as your friend, and a pal that will help you with your problems. Also, according to the way you categorize them, you behave differently. When you look at someone with authority, you will not speak to him or her the same way as you speak to your best friend.

Nevertheless, every once in a while you will meet with someone that is a friend and an authority, pupil and a sibling or a fountain of advice and your master. However, these types of people are very rare, because they are people that take the time to be more than the common crowd. An example of a master, a friend, and a fountain of advice is Njal.

A bright mind, with a stone heart is the worst combination. Fortunately, this is not the case of Njal. He has a kind heart that is willing to share with others, and looks at people for what they are inside and not what they have. In addition, Njal is very generous, and he gives without expecting something in return. For example, Unn was a woman with financial problems, so she appealed to Njal, “What solution will you offer me?” she said. He answered, “Take as much as you need of the money I have out on loan.” (Njal’s Saga pg.36)

Besides these qualities, Njal takes decisions that make us learn form him, and look at him as a teacher. For example Njal has a strong and healthy friendship with Gunnar, and even though his wife won’t approve of his friend’s wife, Njal won’t listen to her because he already made his own opinion on Gunnar.

Therefore, one of the characteristics I admire most of Njal, is the way he can have different attitudes, and he will modify himself according to the situation. Finally, he will make his own opinion about people, and won’t listen to what others say about him or her.

M.M
Mayor Mathew

Would you like to know how you will die? I am sure that most of the answers will be “no”, but in my case I knew how I would die even before I learned how to walk. However I don’t mind knowing that I would have one of the most tragic and agonizing deaths, but I do mind that I tried my entire life trying to change my destiny. And yet here I am in my deathbed, and all the effort I used to change my destiny was useless. Okay, I must admit I didn’t have such a terrible life as I pictured it. Actually, I saved many lives even before they were in danger, I taught many souls to love, and most of all I gave humanity faith.

Now you know a little about me, and I think it is time that you here the story, the whole story, so you can understand me better.

I come from a very poor family and was born as any poor boy was born, in an old farm with only animals and my parents. Some time later, when three magicians found out about my birth, they came and gave me three wonderful presents, therefore I like to call them my three godparents. After I grew up more I was baptized by John.

My infancy will remain as a secret in my heart, because soon the entire world will know my life, so I want to keep like thirty years for myself. So lets skip some few years, until I’m grown up.

I studied in several different places of the world and returned home. In my arrival the village where I grew up was a mess, and the people didn’t have any sort of faith, so I decided to postulate myself as a mayor. Eventually, I won the office since there weren’t any more candidates. In my acceptance speech I made two very important statements that will reason my future actions. First I said, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” (TKJB Matthew 5:17). Also, so people had trust in me and only me, I had to remember the citizens to “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” (TKJB Matthew 7:15). After my speech, there was only one thing left to do before I could take the job. I had to do a sermon.

I decided that my sermon would be in a mount, because I thought it was very important to be surrounded by peace and nature so I could really enter the people’s hearts. After knowing them better, I gathered them around and started talking. During my sermon, I first talked about trust. I told them it was crucial for the entire village that they trusted me and only me, and followed my laws even though at first they won’t seem very useful. Also, I emphasized about the importance of being humble, “That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.” (TKJB Matthew 6:4). Finally, I told my fellows that no matter what you are inside, you are known by your decisions and by the face you show to the world.

When I received the job, started out walking through the streets, and saw I school orphans. When I entered all of the children were having a great time, except for twelve little boys that were crying in a corner. I wet over to them, and started to talk. When the sunset had burst out, I left but came back the next several days to talk to the twelve little boys. Soon, I decided to adopt them all, and they became my help in the job. Oh! Also we invented new names for ourselves. I was MM (Mayor Matthew) a by twelve little helpers were 12MM (12 Mini Mayors).

My 12MM and I started to walk the streets to know the people and their troubles. We went to the only hospital in the village, were we met thousands of sick people, and one came over to me and told me to cure him. I said to him, “Dear child, have you followed all the rules and laws? Have you kept your promises?” the guy said no, so I told him to come back when he had everything ready and free of any sin. Some days later the leper came back and he had done everything, so I told him, tell your doctors to check you once more, for when the law is obeyed the body will heal.

Later on I attended other sick, blind, mute and deaf people, and they were all healed after following every single rule and keeping every single promise.

After visiting the worst places in the village, the 12MM and I met two enemy gangs. They have been fighting for many generations, so I asked one of them, “When will you stop attacking the other gang?” and they responded, “When the others stop stealing from us”. Then I approached to the other gang and asked the same question, and their answer was the same. This experience made me do new law that every citizen would follow. As the villagers read the law I said, “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right check, turn to him the other also.” (TKJB Matthew 5:38).

About two years of being a mayor, came the global warming. All the food my village produced dried out, and the neighbor villages and cities had also run out of food. I decided to do a reunion with the entire village, and I took a can of beans and a corn I had left from the last season. The citizens then started to cry out, “MM! We have followed all the rules, and still we are hungry! Please we beseech you give us some food.” Oh! I was in so much trouble, I had no idea what I was going to do. I first thought to run away, but I had some dignity, so I decided to improvise. I raised my hands and started to say “We are all in trouble…we must all share, and that is a law.” Everybody started to take out the supply that they had saved from the last years, and started to share. Finally, every body was full and happy. The drought ended soon after the reunion and once more my village had a filled belly.

I continued doing by job and made more and more people happy, and at the same time I made more and more laws. But one day, I received an anonymous letter that frightened me out. The letter said that he/she had been sending reports of my actions and rules to the government of the country, and I should watch out because I was making my own dictatorship. I decided to ignore the letter for a while and keep on doing my job. Nevertheless, the next day there were huge posters through the city against me, and some government agents were there. They decided to examine me, but found nothing wrong, so they just told the villagers that my laws were invalid and they didn’t had to obey me.

After the agents left, I sat down and started to cry, but some few citizens came to me, gave me a helping hand, and said that no matter what the government said they will follow me. So I raised up, looked to the other people against me and said that I have cured many of you, made peace in the streets and fed you during your times of hunger, I am sure I don’t deserve your anger. Also, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.” (THKJB Matthew 10:32). So if you want to go against me go ahead, but in hell you will pay for your actions.

Then with some helpers I started walking to my house, but someone screamed from the crowed “You liar! I am sure you are the one going to hell”, so I turned around and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The one that shouted that dreadful sentence was a son to me, was one of the orphans I adopted, the person that said it was Judas. A tear started to run through my face, I turned around and left with a broken heart.

The next months to come were dreadful. Most of the village was against and I moved house several times, because they were invaded by mad civilians. I decided to go talk with the 12MM in a restaurant, and Judas was also there. I told them how much I appreciated their in conditional support after all the trouble. Also, I said that I had very few days left of live, and in my absence my laws and teachings should be spread throughout other cities and villages with the help of them. Peter, the eldest of the 12MM raised and said, “Matthew we will be faithful until the end”, but I laughed and responded, “Dear Peter you can’t promise that because until the dawn of tomorrow you will have denied knowing me three times.” Then Peter left the restaurant very angry, and Judas left after him to talk to the authorities.

That was the lest time I saw my children. They all took separate ways and I got ready for my death. Few hours later the authorities accused me of rebellion and many other things. Therefore, I had to have the worst death sentence, and had to take a poison called Agonize. The name is perfect for the poison, because it is the slowest pain fullest death a person could bare. The victim can feel every vane and artery explode, your lungs slowly closing and your traquea clogging. Then all your bones start to grow insanely fast, and they start cracking over your skin, until all your organs are smashed out of the body, and yet you are still living. The victim will die in approximately 12 hours, with a none stop pain that will make him or her beg for a bullet in their skull.

So here I am. Dead. I am thankful that finally after that pain I can rest in peace. I am waiting for the moment to come back to the world and tell prove all the statements against me wrong, because I believe in true justice and I didn’t harm anyone. But until the day I come back, we will have to take separate roads, so I leave you with a farewell good-bye.
